A LIFETIME EVENT:
5/21/2001 PHONE LOG
“Hello? It’s Asher. I need to speak to my dad!”
“Okay, Asher. Slow down a second. Who’s your dad?”
“Officer Nathan Reinhart! It’s really important.”
“Nate’s Asher? Hang on there, Ash. I’ll get him for you, alright.”
“’Kay.”
...
“Ash?”
“Dad! I tried really hard to find her, but I couldn’t. She was nowhere! And I had to make sure that everyone got home okay, and didn’t get real scared. I don’t know what I’m ‘sposed to do –“
“Asher! Ash, listen to me; take a deep breath. Slow down and start from the beginning okay? Who couldn’t you find?”
“M-Mom.”--------------------------
PRINCIPAL ON EVENTS OF 11/10/2010
“asher has always been a disturber of the peace. he can be quite disruptive in class and just as troublesome. a good portion of the staff have reported a total lack of respect from him. he has been issued detention on multiple occasions for various infractions including an almost perpetual lateness to his classes, especially morning periods, and skipping altogether. honestly, i find it surprising he has evaded an incident such as this until now.the incident in question involved both parties engaged in a fist fight in the school hallway. witnesses report words were exchanged, though what was said remains unclear, before the fight began. both parties sustained minor injuries. as usual, asher remains unhelpful in piecing together events.”
ASHER'S RESPONSE
“hey, we seriously have to stop meeting like this. if you want to have a little catch up, all ya gotta do is ask. rest assured i’ll check my schedule for an opening. you know how much i love our time together. but no promises; i’m a busy guy. seriously, what do you want me to say? i’m not sorry. that guy was a dick. and if i told you it was self-defence, you won’t believe me will you, so whatever. it was all my fault, blah, blah, blah. hand me my suspension, and make this shit official so i can go home already.”-------------------------
THE HISTORY
For Asher, life – at least the life he would really be living - didn’t start until a month after his seventh birthday. Life before was average. He had a dad, a mom and a younger brother and sister. They weren’t rich by any means, but they were able to live comfortably off Nate’s salary while Emily took on the role of stay-at-home mom. But as the saying goes, things change, and change they did, catalysing a brutal chain reaction.
Ash was always an attentive child emotionally. He could always tell when someone was upset or angry or hurting. Without fail, he’d play detective, try to discover the cause and work on fixing it. But his mom was taking all three of her children to the local park straight after school let out and Ash was also incredibly excitable. Even then, at seven, the chances of him picking up on anything out of the ordinary were slim. Emily was as calm as anything and it was too easy to play three small kids.
After an hour and a half playing together, Asher went to check up on his mom, as was custom. But she was nowhere to be found. At first, he just assumed they’d lost her. Merely got separated. So he told his brother he was just checking something out, no need to scare them, and started searching. But there was nothing to find. Even the car was missing from the parking lot. He ran back to his siblings and the three of them began what would be the longest walk home Asher ever had to take. From there, he called his father at the police station. His dad got home a half hour later. Calls were made. A few days later a missing persons report was filed. Then a city wide search. It went on and on, until the trail was dead cold. Mom was gone or missing, but the point was, she couldn’t or didn’t want to come home. Nate went back to work, though he never could let the investigation for his wife go and Asher subbed role of parent when dad wasn’t available.
Life went on as its wont to do. Asher went back to school. His teachers were sympathetic. Everyone seemed to be overly sympathetic and perhaps Ash’s silent routine only added to that. After a few weeks, he clued in. Started over-compensating by being more vocal and a little more social. Enough that it appeared he was connecting with people without really connecting. It worked. When Ash finished for the day he met up with his brother and sister by the school gate. They walked home, Asher fixed something to eat, helped with homework, etc, etc, until Nate got home. They sometimes stayed with the woman next door. Sometimes they had a babysitter, but most of the time caring duties were left to Asher. When Nate was subsequently booted off the force – hush, hush, mind you. The story that went around was he quit to find a job that let him be there for the kids – further responsibility was put on his small shoulders. And Asher being Asher didn’t back down and bow out, but took it. Nate pulled in money by working as a freelance detective which often took him out of Silver City for extended periods of time. When it even brought work. It also left him extra time and any resources he could find to continue his search for answers and ultimately Emily.
At eight years old, school became secondary for Asher. First and foremost were his siblings. Asher had no choice but to grow up and shape up. He became less accessible emotionally to virtually everyone. He was the anchor in a pretty messed up family. Unsurprisingly, his grades started to slip and Ash lost a lot of friends. Two years later, his father started teaching him the tricks of the trade. For protection, he had said. So Ash could better look after everyone when he was gone. Ash took to the lessons like a fish to water, demonstrating an almost innate skill. Ash went above and beyond to do well with the lessons. But it didn't take Asher long to realize that the biggest reason for Nate's sudden interest in his eldest son stemmed from the belief that he'd be gaining an ally in his one man crusade. He wasn't, however, expecting Asher to use these unorthodox skills to break into the nicer houses of Silver City, undetected, just so he could better visualize what could have been.
Transitioning from middle school to high school wasn’t a big deal. Asher had already resigned himself to the reality he was never going to be at the top of the food chain. School was never his scene. It still didn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, but with everyone older, rapidly gaining independence, he had more of an opportunity to try if he wanted. Which left Asher with a bit of an existential crisis looming on the horizon.
He never tried for sports because it was never really in the cards with his responsibilities and Asher didn’t see the point in starting. Ash tried to keep himself out of trouble, call your dad trouble at least, but he still found it. He continued to have few friends, though his smartass moments directed at the less-liked authority holder’s in the school have brought like-minded people on his side. Ash doesn’t go out of his way to piss people off, but it tends to happen; some people really don’t like him. But, Ash knows how to charm when he has to, so things eventually balance out on that front. He's had his fair share of girlfriends that didn't last the distance. More than he knows what to do with or truly liked, but whatever. That kind of love isn't something Asher believes is possible. And if it is, it's not in the cards for him.
Aside from the events of last year, Ash’s school life has been rather mediocre while his home life has been anything but. Since entering high school he’s worked a few jobs to cover them when the money Nate left ran out. When work wasn’t available, he found money through other methods. Life goes on and all that crap; he's got another year of high school to get through and then the daunting task of figuring out if there's actually a chance he has a future.
